Our Okinawa Travel Guide

Okinawa did not feel like an add-on to Japan. It felt like we had landed somewhere completely different: warmer, slower, beachier and unmistakably shaped by its own Ryukyu history.

We split our honeymoon between Naha and Ishigaki, hired a car for one gloriously overambitious Main Island road trip, and used ferries to reach Zamami, Taketomi and Iriomote. This guide brings all of those first-hand itineraries, hotel reviews and attraction guides together so you can find the useful bit without opening sixteen tabs and emerging three hours later knowing everything except where you are sleeping.

Start hereUse our five-day Okinawa itinerary for the complete route we actually followed.
Main basesWe stayed in Naha on the Main Island and Ishigaki for island hopping.
Getting aroundWe combined the Yui Rail, buses, ferries and one very full day with a hire car.
Our trip styleA detailed honeymoon with history, food, beaches, hotels and rather a lot of rushing.

A quick note on family travel: we visited as a couple. Okinawa struck us as remarkably friendly and somewhere we would happily return to with children, but we do not present this as a first-hand family trip.

Plan your Okinawa trip

Begin with the broad planning decisions: how to divide your time, when to travel, where to base yourself and which experiences are worth building the route around.

Okinawa itineraries

These are the routes we actually took. The Naha and Ishigaki guides slow individual parts of the trip down; the Main Island road trip does the opposite and shows just how much we tried to fit into one day.

Island-hopping guides

Taketomi and Iriomote were two of the most memorable days of our honeymoon, for completely different reasons. Our guides separate what we clearly remember from details checked later, rather than quietly turning old planning notes into fact.

Individual Okinawa attractions

Use these when one particular stop is shaping your day. They include the practical details we wanted before visiting alongside honest accounts of what stood out—and what we would do differently.

Where we stayed in Okinawa

These are genuine hotel reviews rather than summaries assembled from booking pages. For comparisons between areas and other accommodation options, use the main Where to Stay in Okinawa guide above.

Okinawan food

Food was not an afterthought on this trip. Our guide covers the specialities and snacks worth looking for, plus the places and dishes that became part of our own itinerary.

Our Okinawa travel advice

If you are planning your first visit, start with the itinerary and accommodation guide, then open only the destination pages that match your route. Okinawa is spread across separate island groups; trying to treat everything as one compact beach destination is where planning becomes confusing.

Best Guide Books for Okinawa

Our guides are built around what we genuinely experienced, but a guidebook is still useful when you want maps, broader background and something that works without an internet connection. These searches will help you compare current editions rather than sending you to an old book that may no longer reflect transport or opening arrangements.
