Family Travel at a Glance

The idea of family travel, especially international family trips, can be quite terrifying for many of us with kids, especially young kids.

There really is no need to be scared though.  Family travel can be even more exciting and rewarding than travel without kids.  There are many articles on this part-time family travel website about our experiences, and we hope they help you feel more comfortable about taking the plunge to travel with your kids.

Conversely, if you are already family travel gurus, then we hope to help you learn something new or see something from a different perspective.

A Family that travels together, is a family that stays together.

OUR TOP FAMILY TRAVEL TIPS

Start Early

Travelling with babies and toddlers can be hard work – but there are infinite rewards for your efforts. Even though they may not remember your family trips it is worth starting to travel with your kids when they are young. By normalizing travel from the start you teach your children to be patient and be able to adapt. The early years are when children learn the most and travelling helps their brain developed. Finally, whilst your kid might not remember travelling when they were you, you will and that is worth something too. You will never get those years back.

Travelling as a family is different from travelling alone or as a couple. The best way to have a great family trip is to travel slowly. This gives the whole family a chance to relax, to just be and to let all the impressions sink in. Kids need that time off. In honesty, grown-ups too, but they can cope better with busy travel schedules.

So on your next travels don’t plan sightseeing trips every day. Stay several nights in one place, take (half) day trips from there and schedule a regular stay-at-home day where your kids can play and swim. In the end, you might see less of your destination, but you’ll get rewarded with easy-going kids, fun experiences, and a relaxing vibe.

Adjust your
Kid friendly activities

Going to a theme park, a playground or simply swimming in a pool might seem like a waste of time when you are in a foreign country, but it is important to include child friendly activities in your travel itinerary to keep everyone happy.

The specific strategies you can use to help children have a good time on the road depends on how old they are. A baby has very different needs than a toddler or tween. But we highly suggest you always do some pre-trip research on kid-friendly activities in your destination that you and your family can take advantage of

You might be used to showing up at a destination, getting a feel for the town, and picking a place to stay. This doesn’t work with kids.

When you arrive in a new place, you’ll want to go straight to your lodging, drop off bags, and give kids a chance to rest if necessary. This is especially true if it’s been a long journey to get to your destination. You should know where you’re staying before you arrive. If you want a bit of flexibility in location, book the first night or 2 ahead of time, and decide where to stay for the rest of the trip once you’re settled.

Pre-booking doesn’t end with flights and lodging, either. Anything you can book ahead of time is one less thing you have to worry about while trying to keep your whole family fed, amused, and happy on your trip.

Pre book everything
Expect things to go wrong

When you travel with kids, THINGS. WILL. GO. WRONG. Maybe your little one has to go to the bathroom and you end up missing a bus. Maybe your son will leave his iPhone in a taxi in Barcelona with no way to get it back. Maybe you plan a great restaurant for kids at your destination, only to arrive and find it closed for renovations.

There’s really nothing you can do to avoid these situations. The sooner you accept the inevitable, the less stress you will feel when it happens.

WHY YOU SHOULD TRAVEL WITH YOUR KIDS

Traveling is life-changing. Getting out of the daily grind and being adventurous makes us come alive. Our travels have been the best times of our life, and we want our son to grow up with the travelbug deeply ingrained in him. Here’s why you should go traveling with your kids:

  • It makes them citizens of the world
  • It gets them to eat weird stuff
  • It exposes their brains to new languages
  • It builds their confidence and independence
  • It increases their tolerance for discomfort
  • It encourages curiosity
  • It makes them more adaptable
  • It creates opportunities to be brave
  • It opens their mind and teaches them that the world is huge

THE BEST AGE TO TRAVEL WITH KIDS

Have you been wondering if your kids are too young to travel, or if it is even worth taking an international family trip?

One of the most common questions we hear about travelling with children is “what is a good age to travel with my child?” Also common is its corollary – “what is the worst age to travel with kids?”

Honestly, there isn’t really a perfect age to travel with kids. There are different advantages and disadvantages to travelling with kids of all ages.

It’s also very important to remember, that age is not the only factor that will impact your travele experience as a family . Each child is different. Your two year old may be very different than your neighbor’s two year old. Each flight can be different for the same child depending on the time of day, if they are tired, if they are sick, etc. I always advise traveling parents to think objectively about their child’s temperament and personality in addition to their age in deciding when and where to travel.

HOW TO BOOK AND SURVIVE A FLIGHT WITH KIDS

Two year old babyboy is looking at the planes in the airport

One of the things parents dread the most about family travel, is hopping on a plane with the kids. But as long as you prepare everything in advance, flying with young children really doesn’t need to be anything to worry about.

Yes, there might be a moment when your baby cries and you are worried about the opinion of your fellow passengers. And yes, your toddler might be desperate to take a walk when the seat belt sign is on. But there is always a way to deal with these situations. And there are also clear advantages of flying with kids, such as early boarding.

These are our top tips for flying with children:

  • Book direct flights and try to avoid layovers
  • Fly at night or in the middle of the day
  • Reserve your seats and meals in advance
  • Travel as light as possible
  • Pack a great carry-on bag for the kids, including snacks
  • Explain to your kids what to expect at the airport and in the plane
  • Tire out the kids before boarding the plane and don’t forget the bathroom break
  • Make friends with fellow parents on board the plane

OUR FAVOURITE FAMILY FRIENDLY HOTELS

If there is one thing that is the most important element of the travel we have done with kids, it’s accommodation. It is easy to get caught up with worries about flights, packing, whether to take a stroller, etc, but of all these things, picking suitable family friendly accommodation is the part that has the biggest impact on the success of our trips.

Finding the perfect family accommodation has to be one of the hardest parts of planning a family trip – I know I can spend many hours trying to work out the best choice especially as many hotels, resorts etc are not very transparent about extra fees for kids. It can be especially difficult with babies and toddlers as whether they are allowed in your room and have any extra charges at all can be highly variable.

We want to make finding the perfect accommodation extra easy for you – whether that’s booking a holiday rental, a more traditional hotel, or using services to effectively house swap.

TRAVEL INSPIRATION THE BEST THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR KIDS

Each family is looking for something different when they travel. Some are looking for outdoor activities, some are looking for historical sites, still others just want to keep their busy toddler occupied while they see a different part of the world.

Know what each member of your family hopes to get out of the trip before you solidify your itinerary. Perhaps your husband won’t care what Instagram spots he has to photograph for your family as long as he gets to visit a certain museum or brewery. Maybe all you want out of the trip is to sip a cafe au lait at a sidewalk cafe (my only request for our second visit to Paris). Maybe your kids are begging you for a day at the beach.

Take all of this into consideration as you add some things to your schedule and discard others.

THE GOOD. THE BAD. THE UGLY -REALITY OF TRAVELLING WITH KIDS

There are so many reasons why traveling with kids is amazing, but it would be a lie to say that traveling as a family is easy.

Travelling with kids is different to travelling without kids. The primary difference is that your job (ie parenting) travels with you. You still need to deal with kids waking at night, getting bottles, changing nappies, getting meals, doing washing etc etc. This doesn’t mean that it can’t be lots of fun, it’s just important to have the right expectations (or even better – have none!).

You need to have realistic expectations of what you can achieve while travelling with kids. We are rarely disappointed while travelling as we don’t expect to do as much as we did pre-kids. I do recommend prioritising attractions that are important and doing them first as you never know what might pop up. It’s also important to keep a good attitude about doing things that might seem like a waste of time when you are in a foreign country. For example, going to the local playground can be a great way to interact with locals, so think of it that way rather than just doing something you would do at home.
