13 best women’s shoes for walking on cobblestone

In a hurry? If you are choosing shoes for cobblestone streets in Europe, I would start with a secure trainer or low hiking shoe with a textured rubber tread, some lateral support and enough cushioning for a full day on hard streets. Save the sandals for hot, dry days and choose a low-heeled waterproof boot when the forecast looks thoroughly miserable.

We walk a lot when we travel. It is our main way of getting around and, much as I like the idea of looking effortlessly stylish, I will choose comfortable shoes over fashionable ones every time.

This guide brings together recommendations from travel writers who have actually worn the shoes below on cobblestones. Most are credited beneath their recommendation. A few contributions came without a name and, rather than pin them on the wrong person, I’ve simply marked those as unattributed.

The quick answer: best women’s shoes for walking on cobblestones

If you want one answer without the shoe-shaped saga: choose a secure trainer or low hiking shoe with a broad, stable base, a clearly textured rubber outsole and enough cushioning for hard paving. From the original recommendations, the Merrell Moab 3 is the strongest current all-round option, the ECCO Soft 7 is the smarter-looking city choice, and the Teva Original Universal is the most sensible hot-weather sandal. For snow and proper winter cold, the Sorel Winter Carnival is the specialist boot.

For wet or slippery cobblestones, start with traction and a secure fit, then think about waterproofing. A waterproof upper keeps rain out; it does not make a smooth outsole slip-proof. No shoe makes polished, rain-slick stone risk-free.

Quick recommendations

  • Best current all-rounder: Merrell Moab 3 — stable hiking build, Vibram outsole and waterproof or wide-fit versions.
  • Best smart-casual option: ECCO Soft 7 — a current leather-trainer range that looks less “I have accidentally joined a hiking group”.
  • Best summer sandal: Teva Original Universal — flat, adjustable and currently available.
  • Best winter option: Sorel Winter Carnival — made for cold and snow; overkill for a balmy weekend in Seville.
  • Best packable dry-day shoe: TOMS Alpargata — current and easy to pack, but not the wet-cobble pick.
  • Best if height matters: Teva Flatform Universal — current, secure and stylish, with the obvious stability trade-off of a taller platform.

How these shoes were selected

The recommendations come from travel writers sharing the shoes they have actually worn on cobblestones. That gives us useful real-life experience rather than a controlled shoe test, so each writer’s words are kept with the relevant recommendation.

The shoes I actually wear on cobblestones

I should add that I am not approaching this entirely from the sidelines. I have worn my black BOBS Skechers (style 114815) and my padded Clarks shoes on both cobblestones and setts, and I genuinely like both. They are comfort-first shoes, which is exactly how I choose footwear when I know we will be walking all day. Skechers still has an official page for my exact BOBS style. My Clarks are older and I cannot identify the exact models from the photograph, so I am not going to point you towards a current pair and pretend it is the same shoe.

A quick note on availability: I have reviewed every shoe against recent manufacturer or reputable retailer listings. Some of the original models are no longer widely available, and I have marked those clearly rather than assuming that a newer shoe with a similar name will fit or perform in exactly the same way.

What matters on uneven cobblestones

My husband has a very specific cobblestone gripe. Every time we walk down an old street, he points out that most of those neat rectangular stones are actually setts. True cobbles are naturally rounded, much rarer and even more awkward to walk on. I now hear this explanation in my head every time I see one.

I always think of Clovelly in North Devon, which we visited often when I was a child. Its very steep, traffic-free stone street is beautiful, but it is exactly where you do not want to discover that your shoes slip, rub or wobble. I’ll use “cobblestones” in the everyday travel sense throughout, covering both cobbles and setts, before Gary turns this into a full paving lecture.

  • Stability: a broad base and sensible stack height feel more predictable when each stone sits at a different angle.
  • Outsole grip: look for a clearly textured rubber tread, not a smooth fashion sole with optimistic marketing.
  • Lateral support: laces or properly adjusted straps should stop your foot sliding side to side. I have a tendency to lean inwards when I walk, so this matters to me just as much as cushioning.
  • Cushioning: enough foam helps on hard streets, but marshmallow-soft is not automatically stable.
  • Secure fit: the heel should stay put and the toes should not grip for dear life. Test the shoes on slopes, steps and an uneven local route before travelling.
  • Wet-weather traction: treat grip and waterproofing as two separate jobs. Slow down on polished stone, metal covers and mossy patches even in a shoe with good tread.

Fashionable shoes, trainers, sandals or boots?

StyleChoose it when…Watch out for…
Fashionable flats or slip-onsYou want one smarter shoe for dry streets, dinners and shorter walking days.Smooth soles and loose heels. A rubber outsole and secure fit matter more than the label.
Trainers (sneakers) or low hiking shoesYou expect full sightseeing days or badly broken paving.Very soft, tall foam can feel wobbly; trail shoes can look and feel bulky.
SandalsIt is hot and dry and the straps hold both heel and forefoot securely.Loose slides, exposed toes and tall platforms on severely uneven or wet streets.
BootsIt is cold, wet or snowy and you need coverage as well as grip.Fashion soles, high heels, excess weight and assuming leather automatically means waterproof.

Season and fit notes

  • Hot and dry: an adjustable Teva or Karrimor sandal can work; a secure trainer is safer on very broken streets.
  • Spring and autumn: a leather trainer or low hiking shoe is the easiest one-pair compromise.
  • Cold, rain or snow: choose a low-heeled boot with a rubber tread and verified waterproof construction if dry feet matter.
  • Wide feet: buy a model sold in an actual wide fitting. Merrell currently offers wide Moab 3 options; TOMS describes the current Alpargata as medium width only.
  • Any fit: try the exact pair with your travel socks and on a long local walk. A famous logo cannot rescue a shoe that pinches or lets your heel lift.

If your city break also includes a proper trail, use our day-hike packing guide to separate sightseeing shoes from actual hiking kit.

The 13 original cobblestone shoe recommendations

Now for the full list. I have split the smarter shoes from the sportier options, although—as usual with travel footwear—the line between the two becomes rather blurry. The recommendation under each shoe belongs to the named contributor; my note above it explains what I found when I checked the model again.

Fashionable Shoes For Walking On Cobblestones

Sanuk Yoga Sling

This was one of Jade’s own choices and her recommendation appears below. There is one catch: the Yoga Sling is no longer listed in Sanuk’s main women’s sandal range, so the Amazon link may only turn up leftover stock of the older shoe.

“These are my personal, all-time favorite sandal. Any Sanuk sandal, in fact, is what I live in come summertime. The sole is made of yoga mat and other recycled material, it almost has a tempurpedic feel to it. And the soft straps are great if your ankles are otherwise prone to blisters in strappy sandals. I can’t say enough great things about these – by far my number one sandal choice!”

Jade, The Migrant Yogi

Teva original sandals

Sophie recommended the Teva Original Universal after wearing it around European cities. Unlike several shoes in this list, the Original Universal is still part of Teva’s range.

“My favorite summer shoes are the Teva Original sandals. These shoes are cute, hip, and comfortable, which is definitely a necessity when traveling somewhere with cobblestone streets, like European cities. As a European, I’ve spend a lot of summers wandering through old cities and the Teva Originals are my go to. These sandals give good support, the straps are adjustable, and they are the only sandals that have never given me blisters. As a bonus, they look cute with anything from shorts to dresses.”

  • Brand-listed uses: everyday wear, water activities and travel

Teva flatform sandals

This is Jade’s second pick. The Flatform Universal is still part of Teva’s range, although I would keep its extra height for fairly even, dry streets rather than the most treacherous cobbles you can find.

“Teva’s Flatform Sandals are an excellent option for walking on cobblestones if you want some added height. They come in classic black (as well as other solid and print colors), making them super-versatile for summer outfits. They have the support and functionality of the Tevas Originals, but with a little height for us shorties.”

Ugg elings

This recommendation came without a contributor’s name, so I can’t tell you who put the Elings through four winters. What I can tell you is that UGG now lists the exact model as unavailable, so the Amazon link is a hunt for leftover stock rather than a reliable current option.

“The Ugg Elings have lasted me four winters (and counting) of daily use walking around the cobblestone streets of Europe. They’re warm, waterproof, and fashionable – the perfect combination for women’s versatile winter travel boots. The shearling accent is both functional and stylish, providing a lot of warmth even without thick socks. They come in two different shades of brown as well as classic black.”

Ecco soft

Haley’s ECCO trainers travelled remarkably well, as you will see from her recommendation below. The Soft 7 range still exists, but the original contribution did not record her exact version, so I cannot promise that today’s shoe is identical to the one she wore.

“The Ecco Soft Sneakers are one of the best pairs of women’s shoes for walking on cobblestone. This aesthetically pleasing footwear comes with a beaded silicone sole and a comfortable and supportive insole.

Ecco sneakers are super soft inside and can be worn for hours. A perfect compliment to roaming the streets on foot. Through 15 countries and 3 continents and over 3 years of constant wear, they are still going strong.”

Haley, Haley Blackall

  • Leather-covered inlay sole with ECFS. Inlay sole is removable for the option of extra width
  • Direct-injected, two-component PU/TPU outsole. A highly comfortable, hard-wearing, light and flexible sole

Ecco bella

Dymphe chose the ECCO Bella as a softer, smarter-looking option. The exact original is now difficult to find. ECCO sells a Bella 2, but I have not treated it as an automatic replacement simply because the name is similar.

“One of the best shoes for walking on cobblestones for women are Ecco Bella shoes. They are great for walking large distances through cities, such as Paris, because they are very soft from the inside. Furthermore, they are not very warm when you wear them in summer, and at the same time, they do keep your feet warm in winter. Also, because of their simple design, they combine very well with any outfit.”

Dymphe, Dymabroad

  • The direct-injected, one-component polyurethane (PU) outsole ensures a comfortable, hardwearing, light and flexible shoes
  • Removable insoles

Frye Melissa Chelsea Boots

This one also came without a name, so I’m not going to play detective and risk crediting the wrong person. The exact Melissa Chelsea has also become difficult to find. Frye’s Melissa Lug Chelsea is a different boot, so I haven’t quietly swapped it in and hoped nobody would notice.

“The Melissa Chelsea ankle boot by Frye is an excellent choice for exploring the cobblestone streets of Europe in the fall. They are made of leather with rubber soles, with a cushioned leather insole for maximum comfort and shock absorbance while walking on uneven surfaces. They come in five different neutral shades to complement any outfit.”

TOMS Alpargatas

Julie recommended the TOMS Alpargata as an easy shoe to pack and dress up or down, and the range is still available. Her quotation also mentions TOMS donating one third of its profits. That was part of her original 2021 contribution, not a promise about the company’s policy today.

“TOMS Apargatas shoes are a personal favorite for travel and walking on uneven surfaces, like cobblestone. They feature a thick enough sole that you have some support from the impact of rough roads, they collapse down making them really easy to pack for trips, and they can be dressed up or down.  As an added bonus, TOMS is a very socially conscious company currently giving 1/3 of their profits to grassroots efforts that are driving change and progress from the ground up!”

Sporty Shoes For Walking On Cobblestones

Karrimor Walking Sandals

Cassie’s vote went to Karrimor walking sandals, particularly for their cushioning and adjustable straps. Karrimor still sells women’s walking sandals, but I could not confirm the exact 2021 model shown here.

“I love my Karrimor Walking Sandals. The comfortable soles will keep your feet cushioned over cobblestones and the straps are entirely adjustable – perfect for long days exploring when you don’t want ill-fitting shoes rubbing against your feet. If you head out hiking, or they get wet, it’s no big deal as the sandals are designed to face the elements. Best of all, they’ll keep your feet cool in the summer too.”

Cassie, Cassie the Hag

Sorel Winter Carnival Boots

The writer’s name was missing from this recommendation too. The Winter Carnival itself still appears as a seasonal boot, although the 11 colours mentioned in the original quotation were the choice available at the time—not a promise that you’ll find all 11 now.

“If you’re looking for more adventurous color combinations (while still staying dry and warm), the Sorel Winter Carnival boot has you covered. They come in 11 different color combinations to complement anyone’s palette. Sorel boots are renowned for being durable, waterproof, and warm. These are particularly good if you’re visiting a cobblestone-covered destination that gets ample snowfall.”

Salomon x Ultra 3

Victoria recommended the Salomon X Ultra 3 for its stability, but this exact model now belongs in the archive rather than the current shopping list. Salomon’s X Ultra 360 and X Ultra 5 are different shoes, and only the GTX versions carry the waterproofing claim.

“The Salomon X Ultra 3 is a lightweight hiking shoe that is not only comfortable but also waterproof and the perfect companion for all sorts of trips. This shoe is incredibly versatile and perfect for both long hikes as well as just day-to-day activities. The Salomon X Ultra 3 is an incredibly stable shoe with soles that seem to just mold to your feet. If you struggle with balance when walking on cobblestones, this is the shoe for you.”

Victoria, Guide Your Travel

  • Foothold: a refined, women’s specific last works with the reinforced top arm of the sensifit, holding your foot comfortably in place, especially moving downhill
  • Stability and cushioning: An asymmetrical chassis designed to accommodate a woman’s anatomy maximizes stability and cushioning while minimizing fatigue on rugged terrain
  • Grip: Two different types of rubber result in better grip. A patterned area on the heel grabs terrain more aggressively, giving you more control especially on descents

Asics gel nimbus 22

Martina loved the space and cushioning in her GEL-NIMBUS 22. That particular version is now an old model. ASICS has moved through several editions since then, but a higher number does not guarantee the same fit—or the same experience on cobblestones.

“The Asics Gel Nimbus 22 is in fact a running shoe, but also the perfect shoe for city trips and especially for walking on cobblestone streets. I myself would not have thought that wearing these shoes makes such a big difference. No foot or knee pain, just walking and sightseeing – all day long.

The forefoot has plenty of room and the cushioning is top-notch. This style of Asics comes in a variety of color patterns, so you can wear them with almost any outfit.”

Martina, Places of Juma

  • Rearfoot and Forefoot GEL Technology Cushioning System – Attenuates shock during impact and toe-off phases, and allows movement in multiple planes as the foot transitions through the gait cycle
  • FLYTEFOAM Propel Technology – ASICS energetic foam formulation that provides supreme bounce thanks to a unique elastomer compound
  • Trusstic System technology – Reduces the weight of the sole unit while retaining the structural integrity of the shoe
  • AHAR Outsole – Acronym for ASICS High Abrasion Rubber. Placed in critical areas of the outsole for exceptional durability

Merrell Moab

Karen’s Merrell Moabs had already survived the Camino de Santiago when she recommended them, which is rather more persuasive than a gentle lap of the shoe shop. The current Moab 3 range includes wide and waterproof versions, but check the exact pair: an ordinary Moab is not automatically waterproof.

“The Merrell Moab is a fabulous women’s hiking shoe that has survived the cobblestones of the Camino de Santiago as well as other streets around the world. The Moab has a waterproof liner for walking on rainy days without getting wet feet. The Vibram sole also keeps you from slipping on slick cobblestones. It’s comfortable enough to walk in all day without foot fatigue. These are the reasons the Moab is the most popular women’s shoe in the Merrell hiking collection.”

Cobblestone shoe FAQs

Which walking shoes are best for European cobblestones?

For most travellers, a secure trainer or low hiking shoe with a broad base, textured rubber tread, lateral support and moderate cushioning is the safest one-pair answer. In this list, the current Merrell Moab 3 is the strongest mixed-weather option and the ECCO Soft 7 is the smarter city option. Fit still wins: test the exact pair on uneven ground before the trip.

What are the best sandals for walking on cobblestones?

For hot, dry days, choose a walking sandal that fastens securely at both the heel and forefoot, has a textured rubber outsole and sits on a low, stable base. The Teva Original Universal is the strongest current sandal option in this list. I would avoid loose slides on badly broken paving and save tall platforms for smoother streets.

What are the best shoes for wet cobblestones?

Prioritise a secure fit and a deeply textured rubber outsole. Then add a waterproof or GORE-TEX version if keeping your feet dry matters. The Merrell Moab 3 waterproof/GORE-TEX line is the clearest current option among these recommendations; Sorel Winter Carnival is for snow and serious cold. Waterproofing and slip resistance are not the same thing, so take short steps on polished, mossy or steep wet stone.

What if I need wide, rain-resistant walking shoes?

Look for the exact model in both a genuine wide fitting and a waterproof version rather than sizing up and hoping for the best. Merrell currently offers Moab 3 wide and waterproof options. TOMS describes its current Alpargata as medium width only, so it is not the obvious answer to this particular Search Console question.

Keeping your feet happy on long sightseeing days

Cobblestones are excellent at turning a tiny fit problem into the main character of your holiday. I am quite prone to blisters, which is why I used to stick to the one pair I already knew was comfortable. What changed my mind about rotating shoes was making sure I wore them in properly first. As long as a pair fits well and does not rub on a shorter walk, I am usually fine when I take them further. I still swear by Compeed blister plasters and normally carry some with me just in case, especially in summer when my feet get sweaty. If a hot spot starts, stop and deal with it early rather than heroically limping through another museum. After a wet day, change your socks and let damp footwear dry fully before the next long walk. That also means I can rotate between pairs instead of wearing one favourite into the ground, which has helped mine last longer. Persistent pain, broken skin or a condition affecting your feet deserves advice from a pharmacist or clinician; this is practical packing guidance, not medical care.

Choose breathable socks in warm weather and change out of wet socks promptly. Our carry-on essentials checklist will help you remember the less glamorous bits.
