Last weekend Gary and I took a gander up to Cambridge, one of the most famous and prettiest towns in the United Kingdom. We are lucky enough to live on the Northern Edge of London and it therefore only took us an hour in the car. However, the town can easily be reached from anywhere in the East of England.
We really didn’t pick the best day for it though. It was snowing, raining and generally very cold. I had been wanting to take a day trip for a while and nagged my boyfriend until he finally agreed. If you are comparing easy UK escapes, our family-friendly weekend in Guildford is another useful place to start.
Cambridge is a small town that oozes with history. This town is most famous for its University, an agglomerate of colleges, steeped in tradition and prestige. The streets are lined with beautiful old architecture and quaint churches. And in summer, you can take a trip down the river, by partaking in an activity known as punting.
A Rainy Morning in Cambridge
Cambridge is a town of cyclists and a good part of its centre has restricted access for cars. This makes exploring the town pleasant, no matter what the weather.
Even though, the Heavens had opened and the cobblestone paths were gleaming in the rain, the town was very busy and active. The crowd had taken to the streets, and a huge amount of people were out and about shopping. And who could possibly blame them? There are so many unique shops up those narrow winding streets.
Lunch at Bill’s
We grabbed a bite to eat at Bill’s, a restaurant hidden down one of the alleyways. Bill’s exudes a friendly fun atmosphere and the food wasn’t half bad either. In fact it was very good and I would highly recommend this place, which is why I have written a full review of Bill’s.
A Sunny Afternoon among Cyclists
Bad luck struck again and all the colleges were closed to visitors. We did however manage to take a couple of quick sneak peeks into the courtyards. Then we just continued our city stroll, until the astonishingly pricey cost of parking in a town made for cyclist, cut our trip ever so slightly short and we had to return home, back to London, vowing to return in the very near future.

It’s too bad that the weather was so miserable, but it’s nice that everyone was out anyway. We often get rain and have to just keep going despite!
The Uk gets so much rain. If everyone dropped everything to hide inside when it rains we wouldn’t get anywhere hihi. But I do also like spending a rainy day inside with a book and a hot chocolate :)
Such a pretty, historic city. Its charm is evident in your photos. Too bad the colleges were closed to visitors, but the buildings alone are a spectacular sight, not to mention you have a reason to return!
Ha. We have been really unlucky. We returned a little later in the summer and the colleges were closed again. But it’s not far for us so we will definitely be returning again
Lovely city. For some reason I admire university-town’s coziness and warmth. Plus, they usually prefer bicycles as mode of transportation and that’s always an advantage.
Not all university towns are quite as beautiful as Cambridge. But I would agree that a lot o them are. And definitely cosy
